CITY GUIDE HOKKAIDO

Private jet charter and flights to Hokkaido

The northernmost of Japan’s main islands is famous for its breathtaking natural landscapes: wildlife-rich ancient forests, steaming volcanoes, bubbling hot springs and ethereal snow-capped mountains. Often overlooked in favour of its higher-profile neighbours Tokyo and Kyoto, this astonishingly beautiful destination boasts a thriving capital city, delicious cuisine and some of the world’s best skiing. Experience it all: request a private jet charter quote from Air Charter Service.

Hokkaido is home to six national parks. The most accessible is Shikotsu-Toya, where you can trek through dramatic birch forests and bathe in the soothing thermal waters of Noboribetsu’s hot springs. This fertile island also produces the nation’s highest-quality meat, fruit, wine and cheese – go cherry-picking, visit fragrant peppermint farms and tour local wineries in the grape-producing regions of Shiribeshi and Sorachi. It’s also worth touring the Nikka whisky distillery in Yoichi, where you can sample award-winning Japanese single malts.

Capital city Sapporo is a laidback city dotted with scenic downtown parks and excellent restaurants. Nearby Niseko is Japan’s best ski resort, a winter wonderland offering spectacular off-piste skiing on wonderfully light, dry snow. Head over to the west coast to explore Otaru, strolling past the beautiful stone buildings that line the town’s canal, or visit the Hokkaido Konbukan Museum to learn about the island’s famous kelp harvesting industry.

Hokkaido’s best shopping is found in Sapporo, ranging from chic boutiques to vast department stores. Luxury shoppers will find world-famous designer labels in high-end department stores like Marui-Imai and Daimaru, while Yodobashi and Big Camera offer tax-free electronics. For a quirky shopping experience, visit the underground malls of Pole Town and Aurora Town in the Odori neighbourhood, or peruse handicrafts created by local artists at Sapporo Factory.

As with anywhere in Japan, it’s hard to eat a bad meal in Hokkaido, with high-quality food served at cafés, restaurants and guesthouses across the island. Unsurprisingly given its enviable position in the cold waters of the Pacific and the Sea of Japan, fresh fish and seafood are a local speciality and visitors can feast on fresh crab, squid, salmon and scallops. Another signature cuisine is Ramen, a hearty noodle soup that helps to combat the freezing winter temperatures. Sapporo is one of Japan’s best sushi destinations – head to Hanamaru and help yourself to mouthwatering dishes from a conveyor belt.

You’ll find some of Hokkaido’s most luxurious accommodation within its ski resorts – try LOFT Niseko, a boutique collection of designer apartments with panoramic views of Mount Yotei. Elsewhere, ryokans (Japanese guesthouses) are a great way to experience traditional Japanese hospitality. Ultra-luxurious options include Ginrinsou in Otaru and Takinoya in Noboribetsu, both of which are elegantly decorated and offer open-air hot spring baths and outstanding cuisine.
