There’s so much to see and do in Stockholm that you’ll be spoilt for choice. We recommend visiting the Fotographiska, a building housing a collection of large and small photography exhibitions, many from renowned photographers as well as lesser-known local talents. Also well worth a visit is the Vasa Museum, housing the might warship, ‘Vasa’, a preserved 17th century ship, you can see the full exterior of the ship, as well as the cannons and other exhibitions about life on board and how the Vasa came to sink after just minutes on the open water. If you’re looking for something a little more light-hearted and fun, the ABBA Museum has some great interactive exhibits.

When it comes to shopping, there are a few districts which specialise in specific items. If it’s high-end fashion you’re looking for, then you’ll want to head to the junction of Norrmalm and Östermalm. For something a little more Swedish, the streets of Mäster Samuelsgatan and Biblioteksgatan have a range of Swedish designers including Whyred, Byredo and Acne. For something more mainstream then you’ll want to head over to Drottninggaten. If it’s souvenirs you’re after, the island of Gamla Stan has a great maze of alleys filled with every kind of shop imaginable offering all sorts of souvenirs and knickknacks. Down by the water you’ll also find plenty of bars and restaurants.

The most high-end dining establishments are found in the finance district and are often by reservation only, but if you’re lucky you should be able to get a seat at Pocket, a modern restaurant in the heart of the city offering the best of Swedish and Scandinavian cuisine. If you’re looking for something more intimate, Wedholms Fisk offers an array of dining options, including private rooms for small parties. It does require a reservation and they are one of the most popular in the area, so be sure to leave plenty of time. If it’s less about the food and more about mingling over some drinks, the Stockholm Wine Bar is the ideal place. Upscale and charming, it’s got a great range of vintages behind the bar and a serene setting in which to relax. If you’d rather do something quirky, there’s always the Viking themed restaurants such as Aifur, where you get to dine in a themed environment.

When it comes to where to stay, Stockholm has plenty to offer. The Diplomat Hotel is a family affair, currently in the hands of the fourth generation Malmström, it offers the very best of dedicated, discrete service in classically stylish surrounds. Named Sweden’s Best Hotel by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, it offers classic art nouveau style, in easy walking distance to the Royal Palace and Old Town. The Lydmar Hotel is a small boutique hotel, ideally located in the centre of town. It is hip and happening, with a lively vibe at weekends when locals also utilise the chic bar and restaurant. Another long-time favourite is the Nobis Hotel, a grand and classically styled retreat overlooking Norrmalmstorg Square.
