CITY GUIDE NANTUCKET

TNew England is full of rugged islands, but Nantucket is perhaps the most beautiful and historic. Set 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, Nantucket Island was once a prominent whaling hub in the 1800s and is now registered as a National Historic Landmark. Today, visitors flock to Nantucket for its sandy beaches, striking lighthouses and cobbled streets lined with cedar-shingled buildings. Nantucket Island was named Faraway Land by its native Wampanoag people due to its remote location. Despite this, in the summer Nantucket transforms from a sleepy island with a population of 11,000 to a booming, high-end tourist getaway. Wondering what to do in Nantucket? At just 15 miles long and less than six wide, it’s easy to explore all the island’s treasures.

Highlights include dune-fringed beaches, three iconic lighthouses and the interactive Whaling Museum which is set in a restored candle-making factory. Here, you can learn about Nantucket’s history as a whaling port until the practice was banned in the 1860s, and see the 46-foot skeleton of a giant sperm whale. Find out more about Nantucket’s brutal seafaring history at Egan Maritime’s Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum.

Wander the cobblestone streets of Nantucket Town, which is filled with perfectly-preserved steepled churches, colonial mansions and 19th century homes converted into quaint B&Bs and restaurants. Top sights include the Dutch-style Old Mill — which was built in the 1700s and is the USA’s oldest functioning mill — and the Old Gaol, which served as a garrison prison. Don’t miss the Nantucket Atheneum, a library originally built in 1847, and find out about the island’s traditional woven rattan baskets at the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum.

Nantucket Island is the perfect place to rent a bicycle and explore. Cycle past grey-shingled homes, cottages with crushed-shell driveways and grand mansions that once belonged to whaling captains. Be sure to stop at the island’s three lighthouses. Brand Point lies near town, while Great Point Lighthouse sits on the northernmost point of the island. To the east, Sankaty Head Light dates back to 1850 and has a distinct red-and-white striped pattern.

On a summer’s day, there’s nothing better than relaxing on one of Nantucket’s pristine beaches. Popular picks on the south shore include Madaket Beach, Surfside and Cisco, which is popular with surfers. Jetties Beach in the north has fine honey sands and gentle surf, while Siasconset on the east coast is a less crowded option. From here, you can trek the Siasconset Bluff Walk, which is lined with white shells and takes you around Siasconset Village to Sankaty Head Light.

There’s fresh seafood galore on Nantucket, from casual chowder shacks to fine-dining waterfront eateries. Try lobster rolls, clam bake, oysters and swordfish at some of the island’s best seafood restaurants: Cru, Straight Wharf and Dune. There’s also contemporary US cuisine at American Seasons and French fare at Le Languedoc Inn & Bistro, as well as a host of cute bakeries, cafés and even Mexican food at Millie’s. Cisco Brewers has live music, open-air seating and food trucks, you can also tour their brewery, winery and distillery.

Nantucket is known for its up-market hotels and B&Bs that are set in renovated buildings dating back to the 1800s. One of the oldest Nantucket hotels is the luxurious White Elephant in the harbour, while the chic Nantucket Hotel & Resort opened in 1891 and has been extensively refurbished. Greydon House was a former sea captain’s home while Harborview Nantucket Island has its own private beach with two cosy cottages.
