Rushing oversized mining parts from Europe to Canada
We were tasked with expediting the intercontinental delivery of two large gold-mining parts. The pieces were urgently needed by our client in British Columbia, but the sole supplier was located all the way across the Atlantic in Turkey – and with one of the parts measuring 4.5 metres wide, the shipment could only be accommodated on a specialist cargo plane. Our cargo experts got straight to work on a solution for the time-sensitive request.
Our Solution
Route: Istanbul > Calgary
Aircraft: Antonov An-124
We knew an Antonov An-124 with drive-on loading ramps and inbuilt freight handling equipment was the only aircraft that could load the outsized shipment. Despite limited availability, we leveraged our industry contacts to arrange a charter at short notice.
Our team initially arranged for the charter to land in Vancouver, but were told at the last minute that the An-124 was too large for the airport there. Undeterred, we quickly re-routed to Calgary, working with the operator and ground handlers to expedite permits and parking.
On the day of the charter, the An-124’s internal crane system was used to smoothly load the bulky cargo. Touching down in Calgary, it was then transferred onto a truck and driven the rest of the way to the mining facility, arriving with the client ahead of time.
