This regional airport located on New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea is ideal for those planning on travelling to the island by private jet. The airport has basic passenger facilities from a commercial perspective, however is adequately equipped to cater for private jets and light aircraft. A handful of smaller airlines operate scheduled services from the airport to other areas on the island. In 1994 the original airport and town were destroyed when the Rabaul Caldera volcano erupted. A new airport was built to replace it and was relocated to the opposite side of the volcano. The volcano caused havoc once again in 2006 when it once again erupted causing flights to be cancelled while the airport was shut for a 24 hour period. The airport has a single runway, which is one of the longer runways on the island.
