DESTINATION GUIDE

Narita International Airport

Narita International Airport is one of two airports serving the city of Tokyo, Japan. It was previously known as New Tokyo International airport when it opened in 1976, but changed its name to Narita International Airport in 2004 after privatisation of the airport. The airport is also used for cargo operations. The airport has three terminals. It was among one of the first airports in the world to configure its airports around the three major international airline alliances. Terminal 1 serves SkyTeam airlines from the north section, while Star Alliance airlines operated from the south section. Oneworld carriers have exclusive use of terminal 2. Terminal 3 is for low cost carries only, and it opened in 2015. Each terminal features passenger facilities including shops, restaurants, check-in, and VIP services. There are two runways at the airport which can handle most large wide-bodied aircraft, with exception of the Airbus A380. The airport is approximately 60 km east of central Tokyo, but can be reached most efficiently by the high speed Airport Express. Bus, cars and taxis are much slower methods of transportation to Tokyo, because the road connections surrounding the airport are heavily congested causing awful traffic jams.
